Setting up NetPoint on a server is as simple as downloading the installer, double-clicking the NetPointVersion.exe file, and following the on-screen instructions. At any point in the setup process if you click Cancel or anything goes wrong, the installer will revert its changes from your server.

The NetPoint setup is mostly self explanatory and is capable of setting up a database, service, web site, and support resources. The database and service components have options that can be specified during install. All components can be setup on the same server or distributed across multiple servers.

Once you've installed NetPoint you can configure and access your inventory by going to http://<YourServerName>/NetPoint or by clicking the Neutex NetPoint link in your server's Start Menu.

Database Options

The Database Server page allows you to specify the database server this NetPoint installation will use. You can either type in the name of a database server or search for one on your network by clicking the Browse button.

If a database for NetPoint doesn't exist on this database server, you can create one by checking the Create NetPoint database checkbox. The installer needs sufficient permissions to create the database on the database server. If the account you're logged into Windows with has permissions to do this, you can select Windows authentication credentials of current user. Otherwise, you can specify a SQL account by selecting the Server authentication using the Login ID and password below.

Service Options

The Logon Information page allows you to specify the user account that will be used to inventory computers on your network. This account should have local Administrator privileges to all computers on your network. An example of this would be an account in the Domain Admins group for your domain.

If an account already exists that you would like to use, you can type it in or search for it by clicking the Browse button. The account must be entered in the DOMAIN\Username format. If you would like to create a new account to use with NetPoint, you can click the New User Information... button.

Installing Individual Components

The NetPoint installer consists of the following components that can be installed individually or together:

• Database SQL Server database for NetPoint. Stores all network inventory and NetPoint configuration data.
• Service Windows service for NetPoint. Polls network systems for inventory.
• Web Application Web application for NetPoint. Used to configure NetPoint and manage your network inventory.
• Resources Miscellaneous tools, utilities, and scripts for NetPoint. Used to compliment existing functionality offered by NetPoint.

Specifying whether or not to install the database component is discussed above in the Database Options section. To specify whether or not you would like to install the other components, you can perform a Custom Setup by selecting the Custom option from the Setup Type page.

By default all components in the Custom Setup page will be installed. To avoid installing a component, you can click on it and select This feature will not be available.
